Safety Gets a Boost at 58th Avenue SE Crossing

58 Avenue S.E. crossing

The crossing enhancements at 58th Avenue SE are now complete, with new gates officially in service as of September 1, 2025. If you've ever crossed here, you know it’s a unique spot — where CTrain and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) freight trains share the same corridor, creating a rare mixed-use crossing used by pedestrians, vehicles, and two types of trains.

For years, safety at this busy location has been managed through a combination of automatic vehicle gates, flashing wigwag signals, bells and barriers to encourage pedestrians to look out for oncoming trains.

To further improve safety, automatic pedestrian gates have now been installed on all four corners of the crossing. These new gates work just like vehicle gates — providing a clear, physical warning that a train is approaching and making it much harder to miss.

To help keep everyone — whether walking, driving, or riding the CTrain — safer at this intersection, the 58 Avenue crossing enhancement project included the following upgrades:

  • Automatic pedestrian crossing gate arms for both north and south pedestrian crossings
  • New crossing warning devices
  • Lighting enhancements: brighter, more effective fixtures that improve visibility and safety at the crossing
  • 3-meter-wide approach paths
  • New advance pre-emption warning
  • CPKC bungalow upgrade for crossing operation
  • Upgraded underground cables and infrastructure
  • TTSC upgrades to provide more visibility of the crossing
  • New light fixtures to improve illumination levels
  • Wider crossing width by addition of CPKC and Calgary Transit crossing planks
  • Cane detectable bedsteads, permanent swing gates and standard signage
  • Standard tactile strips and landscaping
  • Crossing logic changes

Bringing the 58th Avenue SE crossing upgrades to life took careful coordination between multiple teams, reflecting just how complex and important this project was.

From civil engineering to railway systems to lighting and safety infrastructure, this was a city-wide effort involving:

  • CPKC, who supported upgrades to their infrastructure — including the crossing bungalow, track extensions, and the installation of four new pedestrian gate arms with wigwags.
  • Mobility, who ensured smooth integration with traffic signals through preemption systems.
  • Calgary Transit Track and Way, who extended the LRT crossing surface, installed bedsteads, and provided LRT flagging support during live service hours.
  • Engineering and Project Services, who led the work on civil infrastructure.

Thanks to this collaboration, we’ve made a busy, high-traffic crossing significantly safer and more reliable for everyone.
