Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Buses

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Buses

Our current bus fleet includes more than 240 40-foot CNG buses and we expect to operate about 450 CNG units by 2027.

When compared to diesel buses, our CNG-powered buses emit around 20 per cent less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, up to 95 per cent less nitrogen oxides, and almost no particulate matter.

Since their introduction in 2014 our CNG buses have helped us reduce our total bus fleet CO2 emissions by approximately 5,650,000 kilograms. (That’s the CO2 emissions equivalent to consuming about 2.4 million litres of gasoline).

Our CNG buses also have lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to our diesel buses.

We store and keep our CNG buses at our 44,300-square-metre Stoney Transit Facility, the largest indoor CNG fueling complex in North America and one of the largest in the world. The facility is capable of housing more than 470 40-foot CNG buses.

We plan to buy up to 180 more CNG buses through 2026 to replace diesel buses due for replacement. CNG buses fit with our diversified fleet strategy, which is guiding our fleet transition to low- or zero-emission buses in support of The City’s operational emission reduction goals.
